Apart from the usual festivities, spread across the council, Tavira will once again be the stage for the street parades, on the 23rd at the Praça da República, and on the 27th at the Dr. Eduardo Mansinho Municipal Pavilion, at 9.30 pm.

The Festival will take place between the 21st of March and the 10th of April in participating restaurants, as usual, and will enable lovers of good food to savour some typical meals from the Mountains and enjoy the countryside.

An aditional incentive for participants will be that they will be able to enter a prize draw to win one weekend at one of the following hotels in Tavira: Pequeno Castelo (Santo Estêvão), Hotel Quinta do Marco e Herdade da Corte (Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo), Monte do Álamo (Santiago) and Vila Campina (Luz de Tavira).

Healthy food, eat with time, and preferrably in a traditional restaurant. Talk and have fun with friends. Exercise and walk, admire and protect the environment. Respect culture and habits, have a calm life based on quality principles in a fast and demanding world. These are the fundaments of Cittaslow.

Cittaslow appeared in Italy in 1999 by Paolo Saturnini and has as base preserving the tradition, calmness and gastronomic qualities of small cities. This movement tries to maintain the characteristics that turn cities in attractive places for anyone seeking a calm place, as well with hospitality and quality food.

Italy, Germany, Poland, Norway, UK and Brazil are countries where Cittaslow have their own network. Other countries like France, Spain, Australia and Japan are in the process of implementation.

“Tavira: Sea heritages” analyses the relation between the city and the sea from a chronological point of view, with information and education concerns, an exhibition developed from the archaeological remains and artistic items, charts and maps, tri-dimensional models and multimedia items.

The exhibit will describe the physical and territorial changes brought about by the hydrodynamics of the estuary and the mutations of the barrier islands, human mobilities that led to the founding of the city (the first projective models of the Phoenician and Turdetan Tavira), evolution and special architectonic elements, local economies (fishing, salt pans, fish preserves…), trade routes between Asia, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe that left their marks on the city, maritime religiousness as well as the new functions of the sea brought by the 20th Century. Images and films will be presented.

This exhibition will pave way for the future City Museum, involving specialists from different scientific areas (geographers, archaeologists, art and urban historians, sociologists, architects, model makers, film directors…) as well as many testimonials of people linked to the sea.

Inauguration on the 25th of October, on display until June 2009.

The event will take place between 25 and 27 of July in Tavira in the area around the Descobrimentos Bridge and the Vila Galé Hotel. In a tent animated by accordionists, shellfish fans will be able to taste the gastronomy with oysters, clams, and razor clams dishes and also visit an exposition about the oyster production in the Ria Formosa.
